Introduction - What is Insomnia?
|
Contributed by Kim Nesbit So what can we do? First, you really do need to find out if you have a medical reason for your insomnia symptoms. Come on now, break down and go see your doctor. That's why you pay your insurance isn't it? There are quite a few potential physical reasons why you are having trouble sleeping. Your doctor is the only one that can rule out any underlying physical reasons for your insomnia. Did you know that either adding or subtracting certain food items can affect your sleep patterns? Or just exercising more can help? Your doctor can provide invaluable guidance and advice. So now you have been thoroughly checked out by the doctor but you still can't sleep. The doctor has even offered medication to help you out. But you just aren't quite ready to be completely knocked out. What can you do? It's time to ponder the possible psychological factors contributing to your inability to get a proper night's sleep. I am not calling you crazy! Consider the amount and kind of stress you experience each day - don't lie - you have stressors if you are over the age of 8! Consider how you see yourself in the world - are you an over-achiever? a complete couch potato? somewhere in between? All of these factors can contribute to each and every one of your insomnia symptoms. So what is an insomnia symptom sufferer to do? Go see your doctor - it won't kill you - I promise. Get off your tush more often and exercise. Do all (or at least a couple) of those healthy things people are always yipping about. De-stress your life a little bit. Breathe! If you are serious about eliminating your insomnia symptoms, you are going to have to start somewhere. Make a plan. Remember- baby steps are good! Tell someone about your plan- they can and often will help you to stick to it. Put a time frame to your plan - it gives you something to measure. Then have a long talk with yourself - commit to the plan! Then, Happy Dreams! About the Author |
